How to Choose a Fineline Tattoo Artist

Fineline work shows every wobble. Thin lines don't hide shaky technique the way bolder styles can, so who you pick matters more here than in most other styles. A few things worth checking before you book.

Look at consistency, not just individual pieces

Anyone can post one great photo under perfect lighting. Scroll through more of an artist's portfolio and check: are the lines clean across lots of different pieces, or just the best-lit one? Do they actually specialise in fineline and botanical work, or is it one style buried among many others?

Ask about hygiene and safety practices

A good studio talks about sterilisation and single-use needles without hesitating. It's a normal question to ask, not an awkward one, and how they answer tells you a lot.

Pay attention to the consultation itself

A real consultation goes both ways. The artist should be asking about placement, sizing, how the design sits on your specific body, not just taking your order and moving on. If you feel rushed or unheard here, notice that before you put down a deposit.

Trust references, but expect originality

Bring reference images, most good artists welcome them. But a professional uses references to understand mood and direction, not to copy someone else's work line for line. Curious what that looks like in practice? Browse the portfolio, or book a consultation and see for yourself.
